Members and friends of Sakeliga are invited to a business breakfast on “The historical nature of the state,” with Professor Luigi Marco Bassani. Prof. Bassani will present remarks on the state as a historical phenomenon, based on his academic research and publications.

The talk will be of value to businesspeople who are interested in a deeper understanding of not only the South African state, but of the state as a political and institutional concept, its modern forms and its development over several centuries.

About the speaker:

Professor Bassani is a Professor of Political Theory at the University of Milan. He has taught extensively in the United States and Italy, and is the author of numerous articles and books.

Current courses by him include the History of Political Thought, International Political Thought, and the History of Contemporary Political Thought. His research interests include US political and constitutional thought, the social philosophy of the Austrian School, Machiavellian historiography, and Italian early Marxism. His most recent book is Chaining down Leviathan, The American Dream of Self-Government 1776 – 1865 (2021)
